Hime and Iida join Splatoon 2, replacing the recently split duo of Callie and Marie. And they have different names.
In English regions, Hime and Iida are named Pearl and Marina, and form the duo 「Off The Hook」, however, their Japanese names differ completely – Hime 「ヒメ」 and Iida 「イイダ」 form the duo Tentacles 「テンタクルズ」 instead. It’s different, but change is always good.
In Japanese, Hime means Princess – and you could argue that Hime sort of looks like a Princess.
If we go a step further, Iida is a Japanese word for Octopus – and hey, she does look like an Octopus. Makes sense right?

These girls are called 「Tentacles」 – a unit featuring the cute, crazy and lyrical genius rapper Hime 「ヒメ」, and the gutsy, spontaneous and sexy DJ Iida 「イイダ」。
Their unique musical style has Squid Kids captivated, currently smashing the charts with hits. These characters have been selected as your high-class news personalities.

These two will be delivering their top-hit song 「Full Throttle Tentacle」. While she doesn’t seem 18, Iida perfects her vocals, and her Senior Hime enters the battle to bring it to a climax. Listening to this song at the Splatfest will equip you for battle readiness right after.
Why did Nintendo change the names so much? Likely because the Japanese names don’t translate well into English. We will never really know, but it’s not a big deal. I’m just pointing out the difference. Here’s hoping we get a set of Amiibo’s for the pair soon.
